Introduction to Art:
Course Overview:
A two-semester course that covers both
art appreciation (semester 1) and art history (semester 2).
The first semester of the course covers defining art,
cultural purpose of art, visual elements of art, terminology
and principles of design, two-dimensional media and
techniques, including photography, film, and digital video.
Three-dimensional media such as craft, sculpture, and
architecture are also covered.
The second semester of the course
covers art history presented chronologically and globally
through Modern Age. The course is designed to help students
appreciate art in their everyday lives.
Students learn that art is a means of communication
and expression throughout the world. Students explore the
various points of view by which people interpret works of
art and learn to describe the formal elements (line, color,
and shape) of a piece of art. The art history portion of the
course covers art from the following time periods and
places: prehistoric art in Europe; ancient art of the Near
East, Egypt, the Aegean, and Greece; Roman and Etruscan art;
Jewish, early Christian, Japan, and the Americas; medieval
art in Europe; Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance art;
Baroque art; art of the Pacific cultures; the rise of modern
art; and the international Avant-Garde since 1945.
